Abstract

This paper aims to describe about the reproduction of the immigrants’ identity in their respective ethnic festivals, in the case of this essay, we emphasize the German-Brazilians and the Oktoberfest that take place in South of Brazil. The research methodologies were systematic observation and semi-structured interviews, we discuss with the concepts of ethnic groups, writing by Max Weber, and ethnicity, by Fredrik Barth, to understand the German immigrants in Brazil case. As results we analyze that in an ethnic party, at first sight it can be thought that it is a static and essentialist representation of the immigrant tradition, but in fact it contains symbols that aim, in a procedural way, to construct which elements will be demarcating the border of ethnic differentiation and will be used to classify and reframe what it means to be German-Brazilian.
