Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present, in an introductory way, the history of Paraguayan migration to the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP) and the profile, according to the IBGE-Census 2010, of people born in Paraguay and residents in the MRSP, as well as to perform an analysis of the heterogeneity of this population. It is suggested that the aspects that consolidated this migration to São Paulo were engendered in the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, with the massive persecution of opponents of the government, the approach and exchange politics between Brazilian and Paraguayan governments, and finally, the land restructuring in Paraguay and the consequent rural exodus. According to the statistical data presented, Paraguayan migration has grown exponentially since the second half of the 2000s, concurrent to the crises in other countries of destination for Paraguayans. The recent migrant profile is young, male, with low education, working with sewing, living in Vila Medeiros, Bom Retiro and surroundings and Vila Any, Guarulhos.
