Abstract

The purpose of this article is to reveal voices of resistance to Salazarism by Portuguese people living in Brazil and the struggle for democracy in Portugal and Brazil. Through the methodology of Oral History, we recorded testimonies from teachers, engineers, intellectuals, journalists, technicians and artists, seeking to recover the experiences of Portuguese people who, in exile, fought for democracy in Portugal and for the liberation of Portuguese colonies in Africa. The memories reported highlight the trajectory of the group that organized the largest and most expressive movement in São Paulo against Salazar’s dictatorship, from the creation of newspaper “Portugal Democrático” to the split and formation of the “Centro Cultural 25 de Abril”. The aim is to contribute to a phase in the history of Portuguese immigration that is still little explored by Brazilian historiography, listening to the protagonists themselves, with emphasis on the participation of two women.
