Cultural Adaptation: A Systematic Review of Studies Conducted in Brazil from the Theoretical Perspective of John W. Berry

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to survey academic productions that address the themes of acculturation and cultural adaptation developed in the context of Brazil (either as a culture of origin or host culture), based on the theoretical framework proposed by John Widdup Berry. Initially, 41 studies addressing acculturation and sociocultural adaptation were identified. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 6 works composed the final sample and were analyzed. The results highlight the need for further studies and research on issues related to migration, acculturation, and adaptation, particularly regarding the understanding and recognition of the importance of intercultural relations, migratory flows, and migrants’ sense of belonging.
