Abstract

The celebration of the thirty years of publication of the magazine Travessia offers us the opportunity of a critical reflection on the theme that she has dealt with in one of the most troubled periods of human displacement in Brazil, that of migration. Not only the classical migration from the agricultural northeast, dry and poor, to the industrial, urban and rich southeast. But above all, the great displacements of the poor populations of the Northeast and peasant populations from the South to the Amazon region during the period of the military dictatorship and their policy of occupying the supposedly empty spaces. Many, mismatched and even opposing factors and motivations are intertwined in the plot of this exodus, which complicates the analyzes that in this period tended to simplify linearity, all reduced to supposed causes and supposedly mechanically established effects. Few references to motives and motivations and to the imagery of migrations. Clearly oriented analyzes to circumvent the complicity of the migrant with the migration that is leading, which is one of the decisive aspects of migration in contemporary society. Migration is not the same as deportation. No one migrates, even less with family, without imagining and calculating what will happen, without visualizing the departure, the trip, the arrival, the consequences of the displacement, which in general is the definitive of destination. Migration involves a will and it is this will the key characteristic of each episode of displacement.
