This article aims to analyze how international migration modalities promoted by the oil and gas sector fall within the general theory on international migration. Therefore, it is used as a case study the state of Rio de Janeiro, the largest oil producer in Brazil, and more specifically the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Macaé. Through field work, was possible to verify that the characteristics os the displacement achieved by immigrants professionals in the sector under study, as the lack of residential change and its temporary aspect, make theoretical and methodological difficulties arise in its analysis and demonstrate the need to overcome the traditional views about international population mobility.
