delmalek Sayad died in 1998. He is considered today as the founder of the contemporary sociology of migration. Since his immigration himself, he has worked constantly on the algerian community in France through several entries: history, politics, religion, economy, etc. Also, and since his work in Algeria in the 1950s, he was still the great field investigator. Finally, and it is not least of qualities, is his epistemological vigilance in reviewing the status of migration as a sociological object linked to relations between societies of origin and host societies. It is this epistemological vigilance that we want to highlight in the first place by presenting a fundamental article of A. Sayad that has revolutionized research on migrations. Then we will present some methodological and epistemological lessons that can be drawn from this article. Finally, we will try to present A. Sayad as an “intellectual artisan” sociologist, figure as rare and as important in these times of segmentation of the sociologist’s profession.
