This article seeks to present an overview of the process of emigration of Brazilians to the countries of South America, based on a historical reflection on the different phases of international migration in Latin America and a more general contextualization on the continental distribution of Brazilians abroad in last years. We will use different data sources, such as the latest Demographic Censuses, statistics from CELADE (Centro Latino-Americano de Demografia) and surveys by the Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil (MRE). The purpose of this reflection is to periodize international immigration in Brazil and Latin America, pointing out its main phases and how this mobility was fundamental for the economic and social development in the region. The analysis of the overseas migrations of the 19th and 20th centuries will allow us to situate Brazil in the context of Latin America, an important step to understand Brazilian emigration to the countries of South America, an important social process that will expand from the middle of the 20th century. Finally, we will analyze some administrative data about Brazilians abroad, in which we will seek to define the mobility developed in the last decades and the consolidation of flows to destinations such as the United States, Paraguay, Portugal and Japan
