Abstract

The recent migratory flow of Haitians to Brazil has put us in front of the unknown: Haiti. This lack of knowledge has led us to strengthen prejudices and xenophobia against the newcomers. We know little about the history of this country and the paths that led it to the title of “the poorest country in the Americas”, constantly repeated by the Brazilian media. The images of chaos, misery and violence, always associated with Haiti, has distanced the country from the ideas of civility and democracy exalted by the West. Haiti, the only Black Republic of America, has a history of conquest and reconquest, countless fights and lots of blood spilled in the attempt to be free. And even today, Haiti suffers imperialist invasions and a great assault against its sovereignty in the name of an economic order and the denial and acceptance of the black people as capable of self-government and being the “author” of their own history.
