Abstract

Since the settlement, within several cycles, the migrations constituted and constitute one of the main issues of the north region of Minas Gerais, characterized as a hinterland (sertão) area. This article searches to analyze the occurred transformation in people and places, using testimonies and describing the forms how the exodus of the populations took place, at first by the waters of the São Francisco river, after by the , railway tracks, and, in sequence, by the road, before with the paus-de-arara and after by the buses. But the upcountry settlers (sertanejas) migrations are not one way: they involved and also involve come and go, temporary and definitely, field and city, movements to the outside and inside the region, yesterday and today, characterized by the surviving search.
