This article analyzes the life and importance of left-wing European and Brazilian activists in the creation of a progressist Jewish identity, basis for the formation of Associação Scholem Aleichem (ASA) and Casa do Povo or Instituto Cultural Israelita Brasileiro (ICIB), institutions located in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. These institutions were created by generations of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, identified to political and social causes from national and international left-wing parties. Newspapers and other documents, as well as interviews with activists, are the sources analyzed in this article. The political opinions, the way they organized the activities in both institutions, their ideas about identity and education (formation of their own schools) are considered to understand the social and ethnic identity of the group.
