Abstract

In this text we will analyze how the migrants in Japan understand an important Nikkei segment created in Brazil, from the beginning of the 1990s, with a cultural experience “sui generis”. In the 40 years of experience in Japanese society, a growing parcel of migrants has internalized new cultural aspects in facing the challenges of compulsory coexistence with the environment totally different from their cultural bagagge. They developed their own customs, thoughts and feelings, forming living nuclei partially integrated but not assimilated by local society. The immersion, even precarious, of the Brazilian migrant and other Latin Americans in the modern cultural context of Japan, brings new cultural aspects resulting from the construction of new way of living in that country. The new cultural forms created are linked to (re) construction of identity, neither Japanese, nor Brazilian, nor Peruvian or other Latin American nationality, with a contradictory coexistence with the local society. The migrants adapted the popular festivities, cooking, the arts (samba, dances, carnival, festivities and others), the sport - practiced in Brazil - in their experience in Japan, with nippon cultural touches, being today a tourist attraction for Japanese and foreign tourists. Although there is an integration, assimilation hardly takes place in view of the contradictory experience between at least the cultures of the society of origin and destination.
